The town of Viterbo

Viterbo has ancient origins and is the largest medieval historic centre in Europe – famous historically as the City of Popes: in the 13th century it was the papal seat and for about 24 years the Papal Palace hosted and saw several Popes elected.

The city is famous for the transport of the Machine of Santa Rosa, a traditional and spectacular event that takes place every year on the evening of September 3, in honour of the patron Saint, carried on the shoulders of a hundred men, the Porters of Santa Rosa, through the darkened streets of the city. In 2013 the Machine was included by UNESCO among the Intangible Human Heritage.

Tuscia boasts an unspoiled natural environment and multiple religious, cultural, gastronomic and archaeological attractions. It also combines mountain landscapes (the Cimini Mountains) and enchanting stretches of coast, with wide beaches and clean sea. Moreover Viterbo is located in a wide thermal area with number of springs celebrated for the healing qualities of their waters, and in use since Etruscan and Roman days.
