SUSTech: a rising star
Founded in 2010 with a mission to reform and reinvigorate Chinese higher education, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is dedicated to virtue, truth, and advancement.
Ranked first in the world on the Nature Index rising star list for 2021 and added to the Double First-Class Initiative in 2022, in just twelve short years SUSTech has delivered impact through being at the cutting edge of fundamental scientific progress.
SUSTech researchers joined the research on the Covid-19 pandemic, producing the first images of the virus morphology in its native state via our cryo-electron microscopy center and exploring the impact of the pandemic on atmospheric pollution .
We are pushing the boundaries of robotics through capturing the world fish robot speed record , developing novel artificial muscles for insect-like robots designed to aid in disaster relief operations, or testing smart gloves to help patients with tactile dysfunction recover their sensation.
SUSTech teams are also on the frontlines of the research on climate change and the drive to sustainability, studying the loss of forest in southeast Asian mountain ranges, the impact of extreme temperatures on tea cultivation, and climate change ’ s impact on worldwide river flows.

- Liberal arts general education - SUSTech uses the 2+2 model that consists of taking foundational courses and general education the first and second academic years to strengthen students grounding and general knowledge.
- English - it is the medium of instruction across all major required courses. No need for additional language classes, although all international students study Mandarin and Chinese culture to help them adapt.
- International - over 90% of SUSTech faculty have experience of working abroad at top universities, and that shows in their research. We are mainland China’s most internationally-collaborative university with strong research links across the world. - Scholarships - SUSTech provides fully-funded scholarships for ALL accepted undergraduates. Master ’ s or PhD students also have the opportunity to apply for a fully funded Graduate Scholarship as well. Undergraduate students are covered in terms of tuition fees, insurance, health checkup, residence permit, living expenses, and accommodation (a total of 36,000 USD across 4 years).
